En la actualidad, la mayor\u00eda de los residuos pl\u00e1sticos se tratan mediante m\u00e9todos de incineraci\u00f3n y dep\u00f3sito en vertederos, pero no han conseguido resolver el problema de la contaminaci\u00f3n. Como los pl\u00e1sticos son dif\u00edciles de degradar de forma natural, el gas t\u00f3xico generado tras la incineraci\u00f3n hace que la contaminaci\u00f3n se extienda a\u00fan m\u00e1s. Otro m\u00e9todo consiste en enterrar los productos de pl\u00e1stico en el suelo, lo que suele tardar casi 300 a\u00f1os en degradarse por completo.
